The Breath of Nature: Capturing Ambience in Watercolor
Artist/Instructor: Sally Treanor
Beginner/Intermediate workshop
Supplies included
Discover how to create a small yet powerful watercolor painting using only two carefully chosen pigments. In this workshop, participants explore how a compact format can convey sweeping movement, depth, and an earthy, atmospheric mood. We will learn how to mix expressive color variations, create a sense of warmth and coolness (color temperature), and confidently use both wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry techniques. Participants will also experiment with unconventional tools to add texture and character to the landscape.
Designed for beginner and intermediate watercolorists, this session will show how simplicity in materials can lead to richness in expression.
Sally Treanor
Sally Treanor has taught for more than 50 years in transparent watercolor, employing a limited palette based on triads using no opaque white or black pigments. Paintings are open-ended, developed directly from natural materials and artifacts, juxtaposing calligraphic strokes with sweeping washes and soft edges. As a watercolor instructor, Treanor introduces the materials, techniques, and vocabulary of watercolor and art in general through systematic, skill-building exercises that she first demonstrates and then follows with a full-class critique.
