No previous experience is necessary. Participants are integral in the process. This is the first of The In-Between 3-part Series.

The In-Between is a series of three workshops/sessions. Participants experience the theme of the in-between through sound, performance, and language. Different teams of diverse creative artists host each session.

The In-Between: Revealing Sound and Silence

What lies between sound and silence? In this session, attendees will ignite the wonder of unexpected joy through interchanges. Engage in the revelation of a sonic tapestry weaving through an immersive space of sound and silence. Participants will uncover their inner rhythm and step inside an echo while sounds unfold and bend. Encounter untethered borders of sensory vibrations and challenge viewpoints. Experience awe while cultivating curiosity and deep listening through hands-on involvement

About The In-Between Series

The In-Between is a series of 3 interactive sessions inspired by and engaging with the work of Charles Burchfield and other artists in the BPAC collection. We invite you to join us in exploring the myriad possibilities of the state or condition of “in-betweenness.” In each of these three sessions, participants will focus on a particular dimension of the in-between: in Session One, on sound and silence; in Session Two, on performance and identity; in Session Three, on language, looking, and consciousness. Together, we will investigate various manifestations of ambiguity, contradiction, and the unexpected. No experience or expertise is necessary to participate.

To experience the in-between is to become engaged in a constant process of becoming. The in-between is the contact zone, a space untethered from borders. It is between sound and silence; between here and elsewhere; between interior and exterior; between self and other; between past, present, and future; between memory and dream; between thought and emotion; between absence and presence; between languages; between colors; between senses; between “either” and “or”; between the familiar and the strange. An encounter with the in-between takes us wholly by surprise. It shakes us off our course; it shifts something deep inside of us, something fueled by equal parts wonder, bewilderment, terror, and delight. We are inexorably transformed, moment by moment, and the transformation never ends.

In The In-Between Sessions, we will attempt to plunge participants into this transformative state, using a variety of means, methods, and perspectives to invoke the unexpected and provoke inspiration. Through encounters with works by Charles Burchfield and experiments with sound, performance, looking, sketching, and writing, we will journey together to discover a deeper awareness of the powerful role that in-betweenness plays in our lives.

About the Instructors

Paula Sćiuk, a multidisciplinary artist, began refining her visual and conceptual vocabulary at Buffalo State University of New York, where she studied design, painting, and sculpture, completing a BA in Design. Since 2007, her large-scale photographic images have been shown in numerous exhibitions including the Louvre, Paris, France; Times Square, New York City; and Scope, Miami, Florida. Sćiuk explores and captures our vanishing world through her lens-based, field-sound work and has been awarded residencies at the Gullkistan Center for Creativity, Laugarvatn, Iceland, and the Arctic Circle Residency, Svalbard, Norway. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Roswell Park Cancer Institute, among other public, corporate, and private collections. paulasciuk.com, instagram.com/inmyfabulousness

Douglas Tewksbury (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) is an interdisciplinary media artist and composer who commonly works with sound, electronics, photo/video, film, and other media. His ongoing body of creative work is focused on environmental themes and humans’ relationship to the natural world, the climate crisis, in particular. In addition to his numerous recorded and sound works, he has developed media, sound, and performance installations for various museums, galleries, and public spaces. He is a professor of Media Studies in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at Niagara University (Lewiston, New York, USA).

Linda Darnell Barr is a multidisciplinary artist and a native of Buffalo, New York. Her passion for arts and culture has been the fulfillment of her life. As a theater arts graduate from the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts and a longtime member of the African-American cultural centers, Paul Robeson Theatre, and the A.A.C.C.’s dance and drum department, her participation included African dancer and drummer in the Performances Company and Artistic Director of Dance and Drum Department, Also, as a member of the Paul Robeson Theatre, Linda has appeared in many stage productions most recent were Queen Mary’s Roundtable ( Mary Talbert and Protester) and A Raisin in the Sun (Lena Younger). Linda also made her directorial debut at the Robeson during the 2022 season directing Cadillac Crew by Tori Sampson. Now, I’m exploring the fine arts of painting and pencil drawings, and I am looking forward to future endeavors in arts and culture.

Tammy McGovern is a media artist who makes films, videos, and various forms of interactive art. Her practice often involves working with sampled media, mixing old and new sound and video technologies, creating short animations, and hand-coding web pages. Her videos, performances, and installations have been included in several screenings, festivals, and exhibitions, including the Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film and Music Festival, the Schwienfurth Memorial Art Center, and the E-Poetry Digital Literature Festival in London. Tammy's work has also been supported through artist residencies at Signal Culture, Western New York Book Arts Center, and Institute for Electronic Arts in Alfred, NY. Tammy is currently the Director of Web & Media Arts Technology at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and she is also an assistant professor in Buffalo State University's Communication Department.
