Nature affects each of us emotionally. Be ready to be inspired! Open your senses to paint the delicate whir of the butterfly’s wings, the power of wind rushing through leaves, the pounding sound of driving rain splattering on rocks, the gentle flutter of snow and its shadows, and the spray of water misting on your skin.

Charles Burchfield and John Marin painted the unseen. Interact with their paintings in the Young collection, Land, Sea, and Light. Both Burchfield and Marin painted with symbols, innovative techniques, and brush strokes to capture their multi-sensory relationship with land, weather, and seasons. John Young, quoted Burchfield’s desire “… to paint the roar of the wind in the woods… the trees about me clashing and swaying majestically… wind-blown leaves dancing over the floor of the woods, and big rain-drops.” 

Capture your interpretation of elusive moments when you have connected with nature. Personify nature’s elements and forms, by beginning with a charcoal and graphite drawing, color and brush impressions, and personal sketches. Explore your connection with nature leading you to a final painting in the water media of your choice.

On the first day of class, feel free to share something tactile, olfactory, auditory, or colorful to inspire you, and your classmate’s senses, and create an intuitive connection with nature to access in your painting.

Gather your personal photos and sketches, which personify your senses to weather and the smell of rain, sound moving through a forest, birds singing, and moths flying. Personify nature’s forms; reflect animation, figures, and movement in clouds, trees, rocks, and water. Access inspiration from Burchfield’s symbols and invent your own expressive brushstrokes.

Paint your senses!

Supplies:

Drawing paper and supplies; charcoal and graphite, erasers.

Palette, paper or water media board, watermedia paints, backing board, and favorite brushes. (If you wish to work sculpturally, bring appropriate supplies.)

Tissue paper, tape, scissors, glue, and paper towels.

Feel free to bring something tactile, olfactory, auditory, or colorful to inspire your senses.
